Neon Biker Shorts

This past weekend hubs and I did absolutely nothing and it was perfect. Slept late, ate big breakfasts, caught up on movies we never got around to watching, and ate comfort food. Two full days of uninterrupted boo loving was just what the doctor ordered. Our baby girl is back to school, but summer’s not over yet. We still have three weeks till the official start of a new season. Which means y’all gone get these brights until then. Starting with these neon biker shorts.

I’ve gotta be honest, I was leery about wearing such a trendy piece. Especially since Philly jawns neon greened err body to DEATH this summer. But then I remembered I wear what I want (obasha) regardless. Once a decision was made finding these in store proved to be tricky. Forever 21 was sure to have them right? Wrong. I tried all my fast fashion go to’s only to end up where I should’ve started. The hair store.

Yes beloved, if there is anything I’ve learned it’s that the trendiest streetwear pieces can usually be found in the neighborhoods of those who set trends…. the hood. Make no mistake, that’s not shade at all. Black culture is pop culture and black women are trend setters. This is not up for debate. I’m actually mad myself for not going there first. I know better.

After finding a pair for $10 dollars I now had to decide how to style them. All signs pointed to a chunky sneaker and an iridescent fanny pack. Maybe add a visor and denim jacket as well? But failure to purchase said fanny pack eliminated that plan. Instead I opted to get another wear out of my favorite neon sandals. These Rachel Roy sandals circa 2010 are one of my favorite purchases. Perfect for doing the most. I figured why tone down the look when I can amplify it with more color.

To counter balance all the color below, I kept the top simple… so to speak. This fishnet peplum top adds a little edge to the entire look, which keeps it from being too campy. No purse or jacket needed, especially in this summer heat. If you find yourself avoiding a trend because “everyone” is already wearing it, remember that no one is quite like you. There’s room in this fashion universe for all of us to shine!

2017 Style Star : Cardi B

Cheers to the New Year folks! I’ve had a little hibernation but I pray you and yours had a lovely holiday season. Our first order of business for the new year is the reveal of my annual star. First introduced last year, you may recall my 2016 pick was the beautiful Zendaya Coleman. All throughout the year I kept my eyes peeled for the woman who consistently “stole the show”. Be it a new kid on the block, fashion veteran, or a quirky rebel. I believe my choice for 2017 Style Star is one we can all agree on – the funny and fabulous Cardi B.

First of all, NO ONE has had a better year than this self proclaimed regular schmegular girl from the Bronx. Cardi captured Love & Hip Hop fans with her down to earth personality and quickly became one of the most beloved celebrities of the year. Cardi’s single “Bodak Yellow” broke industry records by topping the Hot 100 for three weeks, making it the second solo hip-hop number-one single by a female artist in the chart’s history, behind Lauryn Hill‘s “Doo Wop“. In week 26 on the chart, the song re-entered the top 10 with her other singles “MotorSport” and “No Limit”, making Cardi B the third act, behind The Beatles and Ashanti to place their first three chart entries in the top 10 simultaneously.

No matter how you feel about Cardi’s lyrical content, her provocative outfits, or her skills as an M.C. you can’t deny that she owned the sidewalks and the catwalks this year. Front row at all the biggest NYFW shows with her loud crazy laugh, Cardi represented for the ’round the way fashionistas across the country. For the girls who are just as comfortable in Giuseppe Zanotti heels as they are in Steve Madden.

I should mention that my 2017 runner up was the beautiful, talented, consistent veteran Tracee Ellis Ross. I mean, sheesh, what a babe! So what say you? Did I get it right this year? Drop me a comment below and let’s chat.

Golden Globes 2017: Best Dressed

Happy Monday beautiful, I hope your weekend was as relaxing as mine. I’ve literally been looking forward to last night’s Golden Globes for the last month. I can’t explain why I love this particular awards show so much but I’m pretty sure it has to do with the fabulous fashion. Unlike the Oscar’s the Golden Globes allow for a little more freedom and whimsy in terms of celebrity fashion. Here are my top five celebs from last night’s event

5.  Evan Rachel Wood – In a literal sea of ball gowns and fitted sheaths Evan completley stands out in this perfectly tailored Altuzarra tuxedo.    When asked about her fashion choice Evan stated that she wanted to show young girls that they don’t always have to wear dresses to be feminine.

4. Ruth Negga – As a fellow petite woman I know firsthand how challenging it can be to wear floor length gowns and not have them consume your frame. At only 5’3 , Ruth was an absolute vision in this custom Louis Vuitton metallic gown. The hair and clutch made this absolutely brilliant.

3. Traci Ellis Ross – Quirky, silly, kind, and genuine all describe the forty-nine year old Golden Globe winning star of Black-ish. The first black woman to win an award for lead actress in a television series in over 30 years, Traci shined, literally, in this embroidered Zuhair Murad midi. Traci kept the accessorizing light… unless of course you count her twelve rings, lol!

2. Blake Lively – I know what you may be thinking, “Seriously Kira, she’s overrated”. I hear you, I do – but you guys, c’mon… Blake Lively is one of the most consistent women on the red carpet. She literally slays at every show, baby bump or not, and in my opinion she’s a young SJP in the making. This velvet Atelier Versace gown with sequin detail and pockets made me sit straight up and say “yasss boo”. Therefore, she’s my number two.

1. Olivia Culpo – Until last night I’d never even heard of Olivia, nor do I remember her winning the 2012 Miss USA pageant. However, after last night’s awards, fashion houses all over will be dying for the chance to dress the twenty-four year old star for the next show. This Zuhair Murad Couture ball gown is literally covered in jewels and embroidery. The criss-cross bust add a flirty peek-a-boo whimsy to such a serious gown. This has to be one of the best dresses I’ve seen in a very long time. Her hair and makeup are also spot on, well done Olivia, this is perfection!

2016 Style Star: Zendaya

This year I am introducing a new annual post in which I reveal my personal choice for overall style from the previous year. While 2016 is a memory some have chosen to forget, the year saw some fabulous fashion from the likes of Rihanna and Alicia Vikander, both of whom made my final four. However, it was First Lady Michelle Obama who stayed at the top of my list as I reviewed top fashion moments from last year. The First Lady’s style has always managed to be modern yet classic, but in this last year of the Obama administration she came to slay (see this fabulous sequin gown below).

Apart of me feels like a low key traitor for not simply crowning the First Lady as queen if for no other reason than I may never see such a graceful Black woman in the White House again… but I’ve chosen to go with my gut. My choice for 2016 Style Star is none other than 20 year old Oakland, California native Zendaya Coleman.

The young former Disney star is a true tripple threat: actress, singer, and dancer who has managed to gracefully evolve from child star to millenial fashionista, all while staying fashion forward and socially conscious. Long time stylist Law Roach has described Zendaya as fearless, one who doesn’t follow trends; which is precisely why I love the young muse. In a sea of purchased parts and bra and panty sets beneath sheer bodycon dresses, Zendaya dares to dress deliberately.

Miss Coleman is known for paying homage to the style icons that have come before her and as a result, I often find myself secretly looking forward to what she’ll wear on a red carpet or (I can’t believe I’m admitting this) to an event like the Teen Choice Awards. Zendaya’s method is actually very  common among those hailed as stylish women: wear what you like. In her case it tends to be clothing that allows her to express her emerging adulthood without being too risqué.

It also doesn’t hurt that her statuesque figure is a favorite among designers like Ungaro and Vivienne Westwood. At such a young age I am sincerly looking forward to her continued style evolution and may even purchase a few pieces from her clothing line Daya by Zendaya. There you have it, my choice for 2016. Comment below and tell me who’s your personal favorite style star!

K. Vaughn Scarves: Winter XV Collection

Recently I had the pleasure of attending the showing of Philly designer K. Vaughn’s 2015 winter collection. For more than 20 years Vaughn has designed unique, quality garments for both men & women, eventually finding his niche in luxury neckwear. K. Vaughn scarves are not your average pieces. Each collection features eye catching fabrics & appeals to the individual who wants to stand out in a crowd. I sat down with Vaughn to ask him a few questions about his success & longevity.

K.K.  What inspired you to begin a career in fashion design?

K.V.  I’ve always loved fashion & wanted to be a buyer, but never had the chance. So I decided to start designing my own clothes.

K.K.  What advice do you have for up and coming designers?

K.V.  Don’t do it! (lol) Start small with one or two pieces that you do very well, i.e. pants, skirts, etc…

K.K.  Why just scarves? Why not an entire men’s collection?

K.V.  I actually make clothing for both sexes. I started in women’s then transitioned to menswear. However, I found scarves to be more accessible & the production cost is much lower.

K.K.  What inspired this latest collection?

K.V.  I wanted to do a collection of knits, wools, & luxe fabrics like velvet and sequin. I knew sweaters were going to be big this season.

K.K.  Lastly, the K. Vaughn customer is ______ ?

K.V.  Everyone who knows themselves!

Fall/Winter Trends 2015

Greetings stylish people! Fall is ending and temperatures are preparing to take quite a dive as we move into December. Now is the time to get those winter coats out of the cleaners and pull those winter staples out of hiding as we approach the colder winter months. While there are many trends to choose from this season, I’ve narrowed it down to my favorite picks that are sure to keep you fabulous and functional!

  • Blanket Scarf – Easily the most versatile piece of your F/W wardrobe (besides a denim shirt of course) this item can be worn several ways. Style is as a neck scarf, a cape, a belted shawl, a wrap skirt….the possibilities are literally endless. Get creative!
  • Ankle Boots – While riders and knee boots have always been a winter staple, this season ankles seem to be getting a lot more play. Look for a block heel (much like the boots you wore in the 90’s) and neutral shades like caramel, taupe, or gray to maximize your styling.
  • Flares – If I had to describe this season’s trend report in one word, it’d be “seventies”. Literally everything from that decade is all the rage and these last three trends are prime examples. Skinny jeans have had their run for quite some time, however flared denim is back and I couldn’t be happier. Legs look longer and slimmer in this style so grab your pair now.
  • Suede – Shoes, handbags, skirts, jackets….you will be sure to find this fabric everywhere. Shades of brown and oxblood are especially popular when choosing a suede piece to add to your collection. Not into lots of suede? Opt for a small bucket bag or a fringed clutch.
  • Fur – The number one trend of the season, and rightfully so, fur is back and it’s bigger than ever! No longer are designers sticking to conventional styles. Faux fur is no longer taboo and designers are making statement pieces in bold colors. Upgrade any outfit instantly by adding a fun fur jacket. If your a little more conservative, opt for a vest or stole to accent your look.

Well, these are my picks and I hope you’re inspired to make them your own. Cheers to being fabulous!
